How to Choose the Right Fabric

As the most important aspect of clothing, choosing the right fabric can be a daunting task. So, how can you be sure to choose the right fabric? Fabric dictates style, fashion, and season with endless variety. With Mr. Sid’s made to measure trunk shows in full swing, we’re here to show you how to  choose the right fabric for your new summer suit or jacket.  We’ve asked our buyers for a few tips in what they look for in a beautiful summer fabric.  Here are some guidelines to help you.
There is a lot of information when it comes to fabrics, and lots of mills try to create hype with super numbers (180’s), bright decos, and false countries of origin! Don’t get caught up in all of that; instead, think first about how you are going to wear the suit or jacket.  Do you have to be conservative or can you have a little fun? Is this for the 9am board room or the 9pm bar room (where, let’s be honest, most  business really happens). In the summer, a little linen and silk can be blended with wool for either look, but the more linen in the fabric the drier and more casual the appearance will be.

The next thing we look for in a jacket is how does it feel.  On a hot day, sometimes a dry open weave breathes and feels great, but 8 out of 10 times we still reach for the jacket with the luxurious hand and soft fabric.  There is nothing like reaching down and being surprised at just how great your fabric really feels.

For questions of durability and overall quality, look to the experts at Mr. Sid.  There are many variables to consider–ply, fineness, staple length, and weave–and many subtle hallmarks of what is really going to perform well.  We look at tens of thousands of fabrics per year in order to separate the wheat from the chaff! Our ceaseless search for quality is why we are proud to put our name on every garment we make!
